Clinical Applications of Telemedicine in Post-Stroke Rehabilitation: Outcomes, Challenges, and Future Directions

Abstract

Telemedicine has emerged as an effective adjunct to conventional post-stroke rehabilitation, improving access to care and continuity of therapeutic interventions. This short communication summarizes current clinical applications of telemedicine in post-stroke rehabilitation, evaluates reported clinical outcomes, highlights key implementation challenges, and outlines future research directions. Evidence from controlled trials and observational studies indicates that tele-rehabilitation can achieve functional outcomes comparable to conventional in-person therapy, particularly for motor, speech, and cognitive recovery in stable stroke survivors. High patient satisfaction and adherence have also been reported. However, limitations related to technological infrastructure, digital literacy, standardization of protocols, and regulatory frameworks continue to restrict widespread adoption. Future efforts should focus on personalized tele-rehabilitation models, robust outcome evaluation, and integration of telemedicine within comprehensive stroke care pathways to optimize long-term recovery and quality of life.
